How to Conduct Strategic Monitoring
There are two critical differences between using conventional formative assessments (e.g., exit tickets, Think-Pair-Shares, benchmark tests) and conducting strategic monitoring—one depends on what happens with the data collected and the other depends on how quickly a teacher responds. Strategic monitoring is all about making in-the-moment adjustments during a lesson based on incoming student feedback. This PD Byte deepens the effectiveness of formative assessments, explores simple approaches for diagnosing the formative data, and provides guidance for making immediate micro-adjustments in the lesson delivery to ensure ongoing student success.
