Turning Up the H.E.A.T. Online with District Time Equivalency Courses

Now you can turn up the H.E.A.T. online with the H.E.A.T. time equivalency courses. Each course is equivalent to one full staff development day (approximately 9 hours). These courses serve as a practicum for participants to create a short-term action research investigation customized to an individual’s instructional needs. The emphasis is placed on collaboration and the creation of professional learning communities. The H.E.A.T. online course series includes:

  • High Level Thinking Processes
  • Engaging Students
  • Authentic Connections
  • Technology Tools

The timeline for H.E.A.T. online courses can be adjusted to fit your financial or staff availability guidelines. Each course is equivalent to a 9-hour staff development day, but the course is asynchronous; all participants are not required to be logged into a course at the same time. The intent of the LoTi Classroom is to provide convenient, cost-efficient, high-quality professional development services for participants on their own time schedule.

High Level Thinking Processes
The first course in the H.E.A.T. series; the High Level Thinking Processes online course explores the principles of Bloom’s Taxonomy and complex thinking strategies in order to analyze and improve instructional practices in the classroom. The culminating activity for this course has participants "makeover" a lesson plan that elicits students' use of higher order thinking skills at Bloom's higher levels. Themes in this course include:

  • Identifying Factual Data
  • Bloom's Taxonomy Review
  • Thinking Skill Implementation Strategies

Engaging Students
The second course in the H.E.A.T. series; the Engaging Students online course explores strategies for engaging students and promoting their active role in the classroom learning experience. The culminating activity for this course has participants collaborate on creating a lesson plan that uses active learning techniques. Themes in this course include:

  • Engaging Questions
  • Teacher Strategies for Student Engagement
  • Increasing Student Engagement

Authentic Connections
The third course in the H.E.A.T. series; the Authentic Connections online course focuses on ways to infuse authentic, real-world situations into student learning experiences. The culminating activity for this course has participants collaborate on an authentic performance task addressing each participant's instructional content needs. Themes in this course include:

  • Making Authentic Student Connections
  • Employing 21st Century Themes
  • Assessing Authentic Student Products

Technology Tools
The fourth and final course in the H.E.A.T. series; the Technology Tools online course explores a variety of FREE online tools and how they can be used effectively to support and transform student learning experiences. The culminating activity for this course has participants present a portfolio sample that analyzes the classroom implementation of a selected technology tool from the course. Themes in this course include:

  • Exploring Technology Tools
  • Sharing Technology Tools
  • Implementing Technology Tools
